GPA scale — letter grades to grade points

The standard US 4.0 GPA scale assigns grade points to letter grades as follows: A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. For weighted GPA, AP and IB courses add 1.0 point (A = 5.0, B = 4.0) and Honors courses add 0.5 points.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 is generally considered good academic standing. A 3.5+ is competitive for scholarships and honors. A 3.7+ is strong for graduate school applications. A 4.0 is a perfect GPA on the unweighted scale.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses like AP or IB — an A in an AP class can count as 5.0 instead of 4.0, rewarding academic rigor.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = Total grade points ÷ Total credit hours. Grade points = grade point value × credit hours for each course. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 grade points. Add all grade points and divide by total credits.

What GPA do I need for college?

Most colleges accept students with a 3.0+ GPA. Selective universities typically want 3.7+. Ivy League schools look for 3.9+ unweighted. Community colleges generally accept any GPA. Requirements vary widely by institution.

How do I raise my GPA?

Focus on high-credit courses as they impact GPA most. Retake courses where allowed — many schools replace the lower grade. Attend all classes, complete assignments and seek help early. Consistent effort in every course compounds over time.

What is a 3.5 GPA equivalent to?

A 3.5 GPA is equivalent to a B+ average and represents strong academic performance. It typically qualifies students for dean's list recognition, many scholarships, and is competitive for most graduate programs.
